A “retaliatory eviction” occurs when a landlord attempts to evict a tenant in response to some action taken by the tenant. This may include:
- A tenant filed a complaint with the landlord, a housing authority or official, or a city/town inspector.
- A tenant engaged in tenant organizing.
If you are being evicted from your apartment for making a complaint, you have rights and your landlord must follow proper legal procedures for evicting you from your apartment.
- Pine Tree Legal Assistance– a statewide, non-profit organization committed to providing high quality, free, civil legal assistance to low-income people in Maine.
